Although artificial intelligence continues to dominate headlines, human interactions remain irreplaceable, especially in industries built on collaboration, innovation, and trust, like clean mobility.
Last week, I volunteered as a greeter at the Forth Roadmap Conference in Detroit, a leading event for electric vehicle (EV) and clean transportation professionals. Volunteering was a relatively easy lift in exchange for discounted admission. But as I’ve often found when volunteering, I gained more than expected from the experience.
Setting the Tone
Greeting attendees might seem like a small task, but first impressions shape the conference experience. Many participants arrived at Huntington Place with their eyes on their phones, trying to find their way. Yet when they were met with a warm welcome, clear directions, and a genuine smile, I could feel the tension ease.
With each greeting, I felt a sense of, “I’m not alone. There is someone who wants to help.” This led to some unexpected questions, like, “What should I do in Detroit before my flight leaves tomorrow?” “Where is the backpack I left by the wall?” and “How do I get my wagon down to the main floor?” The more unusual the question, the more invested I felt in helping to find an answer, and the greater the human connection I felt with the person asking.
Collaboration That Starts with Conversation
Conferences like Forth Roadmap are invaluable. They create space for the kinds of human interactions that drive progress in the EV and clean mobility sectors. In fact, some of my most productive takeaways from Forth came from panels featuring partners I already know. But it wasn’t until we were in that shared setting—listening, responding, brainstorming—that new opportunities for collaboration emerged.
The Power of Being Present
Yes, I repeated “Registration and check-in are downstairs” at least a hundred times. But every one of those exchanges reminded me that we’re not alone in this work. The simple act of showing up, listening, and responding builds the foundation for stronger relationships and lasting progress.
So, as we look ahead, let’s keep the conversations going. Keep asking tough questions, keep showing up, and keep connecting.
Join us for more meaningful interactions at the Clean Fuels Michigan Summit on November 8, where collaboration and human connection will once again prove irreplaceable.
