Michigan NEVI Round 3:
$51 Million in EV Charging Funding Is Now Open

June 24, 2026

Applications are now open for the $51 million available in Round 3 of the Michigan National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) issued the NEVI Round 3 RFP on June 8, 2026, with an application deadline of August 7, 2026. Award notifications are expected this fall.

What Is Michigan’s NEVI Round 3?

The NEVI Formula Program is a federal program funding public DC fast charging infrastructure across the country. Michigan received $110 million in total NEVI funding as a part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). To date, rounds 1 and 2 have funded 83 charging stations along state Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs). The first two rounds earned Michigan “fully built-out” certification from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). With a fully built-out status, the remaining $51 million in NEVI funding for round 3 can be spent with significantly more flexibility.

What Makes Round 3 Different

Round 3 is open to applications for EV charging projects across the entire state. Sites no longer need to be within one mile of an AFC. Applicants can propose charging stations anywhere in Michigan, at any publicly accessible location.

MDOT has set four goals for Round 3 site selection:

  1. Close geographic EV charging gaps and reduce range anxiety
  2. Promote equitable community access to EV charging
  3. Support Michigan tourism
  4. Enable medium-duty vehicle charging

Round 3 Project Selection Process

MDOT expects to fund approximately 60 sites through Round 3. The selection process will follow a two-phase approach.

Phase 1 targets the 40 Michigan counties that have not yet received a NEVI-funded site. MDOT will select one site per county from this group first.

Phase 2 opens to all 83 counties. MDOT will select up to one additional site per county in order of proposal score until funding runs out.

Shaded counties represent the 40 counties in Michigan without a NEVI site from rounds 1 & 2 that will be prioritized in round 3, phase 1.

Medium-Duty Charging Is a Competitive Advantage

Round 3 rewards medium-duty (MD) vehicle charging capability with up to 10 bonus points out of 100. To earn these points, proposals should include at least one port with a minimum continuous output of 200 kW, pull-through stalls capable of accommodating vehicles over 40 feet, and a site layout designed for larger vehicle classes.

Tracking Funding Opportunities in Michigan

In addition to NEVI Round 3, several other clean mobility funding programs are active or recently closed in Michigan.

  • The Clean Fuel and Charging Infrastructure (CFCI) Program, administered by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), recently closed its second round of applications focused on public charging projects. EGLE expects to award $10 million to selected projects. In its first round, the CFCI program awarded $10 million for multifamily housing charging infrastructure, expanding access to EV charging for residents in multifamily housing across the state.
  • Michigan also recently completed the $125 million Clean School Bus Program, which helped school districts across the state electrify their fleets with zero-emission buses.

Tracking all of these programs across multiple state agencies can be challenging. Clean Fuels Michigan maintains a Funding Hub to help our members and other interested organizations, businesses, and communities stay current on available EV and clean transportation funding in Michigan.
